Lviv doctors help to give birth to twins with intertwined umbilical cords

A unique and very rare case was recorded by doctors of the Territorial Medical Association № 3 in Lviv (maternity ward of the 3rd city hospital on Rappoporta Street). An ultrasound of a pregnant woman, who was registered in a women’s clinic, revealed an intertwining of two umbilical cords during ultrasound, which occurs in monochorionic monoamniotic twins (when the fetus has one common placenta and is in one amniotic cavity).

Such a pregnancy, doctors say, requires special monitoring and premature birth, because in the process of delivery can be a serious complication – the syndrome of “feto-fetal transfusion”. This is when one fetus “steals” another, taking on more food, as a result of which both children can have serious complications.
